Nephrology & Dialysis
The kidneys play a vital role in filtering and managing waste in our bodies. Even minor kidney discomfort can cause significant unrest. More than 30% of critically ill patients experience varying degrees of renal failure. Thus, it is crucial to seek the expertise of an experienced nephrologist for accurate diagnosis and treatment of kidney disorders.
Dialysis
Dialysis is the process of purifying the blood through artificial means when kidney function falls below the minimum requirement to sustain the body and maintain normal parameters. This can involve using another artificial technology or undergoing a kidney transplant to replace lost kidney function.
There are two main types of dialysis: hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.
Haemodialysis: In haemodialysis, blood is purified outside the body through a machine called a “hemodialyser.” The blood flows through the dialyser, where waste products and excess fluids are removed, and then the purified blood is returned to the body.
Peritoneal Dialysis: Peritoneal dialysis is another method where the blood is purified inside the body. A special fluid called dialysis solution is infused into the abdomen through a tube. This fluid stays in the abdomen for a few hours, absorbing waste products and excess fluids from the blood through the peritoneal membrane. Then, the used dialysis solution is drained out of the abdomen, completing the purification process.
Both types of dialysis have their benefits and considerations, and the choice between them depends on factors such as the patient’s health condition, lifestyle, and medical recommendations.
